Transcend the Immediate “My” Story

“True transcendence frees us from the tyranny of I am, the idolatry of we are, and the scapegoating of they are.”
Richard Rohr, Transcending a Single Story
The first half of life is about building the “I” part of “my story”; a natural part of one’s survival. The back half of life is letting go of the “I” and noticing the Our, Other and The Story; living with it all without attachment. Clinging to what “I” want, when “I” want it, will lead me to suffering. I do want to honor my “I” and couple it with Our, Other and The to allow a greater perspective and wise choice in any given moment.
Lately, a great refugee for my “I”, in the midst of much confusion, is the thought/belief that “there is a larger story here” that I do not understand yet know it’s true. This allows me to let go of trying to figure out all the specifics and place my attention somewhere else….perhaps take in the good.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to transcend the immediate “my” story….if only for a moment.
