Be Compassionate With Myself And Others
“Compassion arises when we are willing to come close to suffering.”
Joseph Goldstein, The Map of Wisdom, Part 2
Mindfulness helps us stay present with life as it is, not just the pleasant parts, but also the unpleasant/pain filled ones. Goldstein reminds us that compassion grows when we are willing to come close to suffering, rather than turn away.
In meditation, we practice staying with our experience which includes a number of unpleasant moments…a busy mind, a heavy heart, or an ache in the body. This simple act of staying, opens the heart. Over time, we learn that suffering is not a mistake or a failure, but part of being human.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to be compassionate with myself and others….if only for a moment.
