Be Curious
“If everybody could just wake up and go, ‘I don’t know.’"
Jennifer Freed, A Map to Your Soul, The Sacred Speaks podcast, 1:04:04
If everybody could just wake up and go, "I don’t know," wouldn’t that be nice? All this certainty is counter to the mystery, perhaps to God. Reminds me of a story I heard about two 80+ year olds discussing life and one says to the other, “I don’t know shit”. In mindfulness practice, this not knowing is not confusion but freedom, a release from the mind’s habit of grasping for certainty. Some might say this is “beginners mind”. When we allow experience to unfold without immediately naming, judging, or fixing it, we come into direct contact with the body, feeling tone, and mind as they are with curiosity. This is not my set point as I typically will have a quick judgement that sounds like this is “good or bad”. I am working to see events as pleasant and unpleasant as this invites more of a ‘I don’t know” mindset. In this way, “IDK” becomes a doorway towards greater awareness. I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to be curious….if only for a moment.
