Be Led And Not LIED To
In ancient texts it has a different meaning: “Passio” is the first-person singular passive of the word which means “I suffer. I am acted upon.” What passion always refers to in the ancient texts is this peculiar, compulsive nature of stuck emotion. The passions are really stuck emotions, revolving around themselves to generate drama.
-Cynthia Bourgeault, Purifying the Heart, CAC
The recent CAC Daily Meditation, Purifying the Heart, reminds us how quickly thoughts can become passions when we attach them to “I-stories.” Mindfulness helps by noticing thoughts and feelings without clinging to them, thus we prevent them from hardening into drama. In this way, mindfulness supports the purifying of the heart, creating space for clarity, peace and God’s presence.
Easy to say, hard to do, and I am recognizing that I have work to do as my passions have led me to forget what is important. Led me, or lied (see the I in LIED), to me this story of what of greater importance and miss the clarity, peace and presence.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to be led and not LIED to....if only for a moment.
