Let Go Of The Commentary
“Virtually all of your psychological suffering, and arguably most of your physical suffering, is a matter of being lost in thought.” [0:11–0:18]
“The same sensation can be pleasant or unpleasant depending entirely on the conceptual frame you put around it.” [3:22–3:25]
Sam Harris, Unlocks the Secret to Life, YouTube
These quotes invite us to notice how suffering arises from being caught in thought rather than from direct experience itself. Mindfulness helps us recognize when the mind is adding commentary, meaning, or anticipation to any given moment. As awareness grows, we begin to see how our relationship to sensations, shapes whether it feels manageable or overwhelming. The practice is less about changing what we feel and more about how we meet what is present.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to let go of the commentary...if only for a moment.
