Be Aware of the Stories I Tell
“Perhaps the most important revelation in human split-brain research is precisely this: that the left cerebral hemisphere of humans is prone to fabricating verbal narratives that do not necessarily accord with the truth.” - Antonio Damasio
“The left brain weaves its story in order to convince it and you that it is in full control... It is really trying to keep our personal story together. To do that, we have to learn to lie to ourselves.” - Michael Gazzaniga
These reflections from the book, “Chasing Peace” invites us into considering our lies. Mindfulness helps us notice the quiet ways the mind creates meaning, and sometimes distortions, without judgment or shame. In sitting still, we begin to see these patterns with compassion and curiosity rather than fear. Over time, we can loosen our grip on the false certainties. The School of Life, “How We Lie to Ourselves” is an interesting watch.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to be aware of the stories I tell….if only for a moment.
