Soften
While on vacation, I misplaced my keys. I try to keep them in the same spot in my backpack. So, when I went to grab them and they weren’t there, I began casually searching, retracing my steps, checking jacket pockets, digging through bags….no luck. Others joined in as I announced that they were MIA. They were quite kind in assisting me with the search.
And then, 36 hours later, there they were, right in my backpack, and I had simply overlooked them.
All of it wasn’t a crisis. Just one of those mildly annoying situations where things don’t go as expected. What struck me was how quickly my mind jumped into story, “Why didn’t I check more thoroughly? I got everyone involved and it was unnecessary. I SHOULD have _______.”
I added layers to this experience, the second arrow, with self-judgment, worry and pressure to “get it right.” It’s not dramatic, but it did impact me a bit on how I held it throughout the day. Mindfulness helps unwind these patterns. It’s not as if we are not going to do this…..human pattern. With practice, we can notice the stories and soften around it all.
I find mindfulness meditation supports my intention to soften ....if only for a moment.
